Cranberry growth: a key stage in fruit development

News & Blog

The cranberry growth stage follows immediately after pollination and fruit set. It is a crucial phase in fruit development. It generally lasts from mid-July to the end of September, depending on weather conditions and the variety grown. During this period, the fertilized ovaries gradually transform into well-formed berries, growing from small green fruits into increasingly larger cranberries.

The enlargement is mainly the result of cell expansion, a process during which the fruit's cells multiply and enlarge due to the accumulation of water, sugars, and organic acids. This stage is influenced by a combination of environmental, nutritional, and physiological factors.

Irrigation.

First, irrigation plays a central role: a regular and adequate supply of water is essential to support fruit growth and prevent water stress, which could slow down its development. Growers install tensiometer probes in their fields to closely monitor soil moisture levels and, therefore, the amount of water available to the plant. This tool allows them to determine when to irrigate to provide additional water, i.e., when tension levels are higher than desired. The desired tension range for the crop is between 3 and 7.5 kPa, but the ideal tension level varies from one stage of the growing season to another and depends on the soil texture, which has a direct impact on the soil's ability to drain or retain moisture.

Temperature

Temperature also influences the rate of growth. Moderate to warm temperatures promote photosynthesis and plant metabolism, while extreme conditions, such as intense heat or cold nights, can slow down this process. Although cool nights promote the previous stage of fruit set, we want warmer nights in August to promote fruit growth.

Plant nutrition

Plant nutrition also plays a role. A good balance of nutrients, particularly nitrogen and potassium, supports fruit tissue development and sugar transport. In addition, plant health, especially that of the foliage, is crucial. A canopy with adequate density and good health allows for efficient photosynthesis, providing the energy necessary for fruit growth.

Genetics

Finally, genetics also come into play, as each variety has its own potential for development and growth. In particular, the average weight of a fruit varies from one variety to another, such as Steven compared to Crimson Queen, for example. Moreover, the growth curve will also vary depending on the cultivar, with some reaching their growth plateau earlier than others.

Visually, there is a noticeable change over the weeks: the berries grow rapidly, their color changes from pale green to a deeper green, and sometimes a slight pinkish tinge may appear, depending on the variety. However, at this stage, the fruits are still very firm and very acidic.

During this period, from August to late September, the plant will also begin to form buds that will determine the future harvest. Water supply at this stage will also be crucial. Although we want adequate water resources to support growth, it is not desirable to maintain excessively low tension thresholds, as water will also promote vegetative growth of the plant rather than bud formation. Irrigation times must also be taken into account, as it is not desirable to have excessively wet foliage at night, which promotes fruit rot. Producers should therefore irrigate early in the morning to limit this impact and allow the plant to maximize its photosynthetic activity using the morning light.

Finally, growth prepares the cranberry for the next stage, ripening, when the fruit acquires its characteristic red color and develops its final organoleptic qualities.

It’s the simple everyday things that make our berries so tender, tasty, healthy and give them the perfect texture. Each parcel of land we farm with care and respect. Each extra day we wait to ensure crops are harvested at peak ripeness. Each minute saved between field and freezer. Each berry perfectly preserved. Each unwanted substance detected and eliminated. And each delicious bite our customers enjoy.
